INSIDE CNM
The Center for New Media offers both traditional 16-week college classes
and short, intensive classes in animation, creative and technical writing,
digital photography, e-commerce, graphic design, programming, and web/multimedia
design and development for both the traditional college student and the
professional graphic designer or web developer. We've built a reputation
growing the Graphic Communications department from primarily classes teaching
layout and graphic design for print-based production. Reacting to the
demand for skills needed to get jobs designing and developing web sites
we've partnered with other departments at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.
Realizing students need more than graphic design to get those jobs, we
partnered with Business Administration, Communication Arts, and Computer
Information Systems to create a multidiscipline team to reflect how web
design and development teams work in industry teams made up of graphic
designers, web developers, back end programmers, creative writers, information
architects, and project managers. Professionals guide the curriculum taught
to ensure that students learn skills used in industry now, not 5 years
ago.
To keep pace with the changing software, we are also offering intensive
classes geared for professionals in this business. We know professionals
can pick up the software pretty easily, but sometimes may want a knowledgeable
instructor to take some of the frustration and mystery out of a new tool—you
want someone to tell you why, not just how.
We're working to blend learning and training, students and professionals;
we're looking to create community where there was none. This fits in with
Kalamazoo Valley Community College's mission to be an important partner
in transforming lives, in building communities, and in the economic development
of this region.
